As an avid gamer, and enthusiastic of industrial design in consoles, I wanted to create some concepts for the 9th generation of video game console, beginning with Xbox. All modelling and rendering was completed in Autodesk Inventor. I compiled all images of this project into a single document which may be viewed here.

6 months after I worked on the these concepts, the Xbox Series X was revealed. Following the reveal event, I looked back on the console I designed, with some regrets over my work. I would change the power button to reflect the Xbox logo, along with the shape of the vents on top and re-do the colour scheme. Regardless of my choices, I had fun with the concepts, and it reminded me to always evolve my work and critique it.

Sony revealed the DualSense controller on April 7, right in the middle of my quarantine. With the free time I had due to my cancelled term, I started working on some ideas for the PS5. I began modelling these using Fusion 360, to try and get some more practice with the internal renderer as I anticipated I would rely on it heavily for my masters project. Though I was disappointed with the quality of the renders, I really liked some of the designs I came up with. I had tried to emulate both the colour scheme of the recently revealed DualSense, along with the PS5 dev kit that was reported by various sites. Once my masters project is complete, I would like to return to these console concepts and try again.

Two concepts for the PS5 I toyed with briefly. The left was modelled and rendered using Inventor, the bottom one was in Fusion 360. I didn’t like how the one on the left was coming along, so I switched to my idea below.

I had tried to strike a balance between the PS5 dev kit and the futuristic DualSense controller which had just been revealed. It reminded me a lot of the art style used for objects and architecture in the Mass Effect series (below.) In my eyes, Sony has always designed their consoles a little more liberally than Microsoft, so I wanted to do something a little weirder, with more curves.
